The King of Nothing to Do

Yet another assortment of images and text with which to distract yourself from the crushing hopelessness of day to day living. Enjoy!

NEW WAYS TO FALL APARTMusic mix by Luis K.January 2012Here, arranged for your listening pleasure, is a mix of music that I’ve been into lately. And by lately, I mean the last 8 months or so; it’s been a while since I did one of these. We’ve been really busy getting the new magazine off the ground (go, go, get a copy). So this serves as a year-ender of sorts, with songs ranging from one end of 2011 to the other. Some of them  may be overly familiar by now, some of them may be new to your ears, all of them make for good giddy listening.01  Ra Ra Riot > Too Dramatic02  Adventure Galley > Weekend Lovers03  Frank Ocean > Strawberry Swing04  The Damnwells > She Goes Around05  Generationals > I Promise06  Kimbra > Cameo Lover (Live at Sing Sing Studios)07  Common > Blue Sky08  fun. feat Janelle Monae > We Are Young09  Alex Turner > Hiding Tonight10  Softlightes > 198311  Kavinsky and Lovefoxxx > Nightcall12  Family of the Year > St. Croix13  Destroyer > Savage Night at the Opera14  Lupe Fiasco > The End of the World15  Eddie Vedder and Cat Power > Tonight You Belong To Mehttp://www.mediafire.com/?agn38d3qurbxzygWhen I first heard “Too Dramatic” early in 2011, I thought there was no way it would not become a massive, massive hit. I was wrong. Glorious song nonetheless. “Weekend Lovers” continues that headlong rush of pop goodness, and then “Strawberry Swing” takes us back to spaceship liftoff childhood daydream days (nostalgia ultra indeed). The Damnwells kick ass again with a fun, sexy, barroom jukebox dance-along of a song; Generationals make a promise that they can keep; and should-be pop sensation Kimbra earworms her way into your head (that chorus is like a sunshine burst lobbed straight at your pleasure centers). Common borrows some sounds from ELO and makes triumphant hip-hop, and fun. enlists (and underuses, but it’s okay) Janelle Monae in a mighty burn-bright anthem of a song.“Hiding Tonight” is a lovely little heart-bender from the Submarine soundtrack; “1983” sounds, in the best possible way, like it could have come from the year it’s named after; and of course as long as we’re reliving the 80s there’s the slightly unhinged cool of “Nightcall” from the Drive soundtrack.Sing along (and dance in slow motion) with Family of the Year; enjoy a night at the opera Destroyer-style; be inspired by Lupe Fiasco (rhyming over M83’s “Midnight City,” no less); and end the evening with a gentle ukelele-driven duet from Eddie Vedder and Cat Power. I know, with the dawn, that you will be gone/ But tonight you belong to me.
