MEETING DOMINIQUE
“We met for lunch in a Quezon City restaurant that served  Vietnamese fare; I was uncharacteristically early, which gave me the  opportunity to observe her as she entered. In my memory, it was the kind  of casual yet noteworthy entrance that deserved a soundtrack—either a  swell of shimmery, summery guitar-pop or, perhaps more appropriately, an  old-fashioned 50s-era instrumental replete with subtle strings.
“As she walked towards our table, I noted that she was wearing the  sort of outfit that made me feel underdressed and ridiculously fortunate  all at once; her black-and-white dress complemented that certain  classic movie-star quality she has, while underscoring the almost  disturbing youthfulness of her face. I had to remind myself that she’s  in her early twenties. I wouldn’t have blamed anyone for guessing she  was in her early teens.”
